Three Common Questions Every Vegan Heard Before

It is no secret that only a small number of people are fully committed to a vegan diet. So, when meeting new people and it becomes obvious that you are eating only vegan food, plenty of questions are being asked. In this post, I want to focus on the three common questions being asked.

In my experience, the first question that I usually get asked first is: What can you eat then? This might be shocking, but as a vegan, you can eat a lot. There are plenty of whole foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and different grains, such as brown rice. Further, we are living in the 21st century and have plenty of vegan processed food products. For example, chocolate bars, pasta, and much more. Almost everything that is usually not considered vegan, can nowadays be found as vegan options. You just have to be open to them and try them.

Another very common question is: Is a vegan diet healthy? Well, it depends on the person and their dietary habits. Like in any other diet, you can consume very unhealthy depending on the food choices you make. For example, fries are vegan but that does not mean that they are healthy. You are eating healthy when you are balancing your veggies, proteins, carbs, and avoid eating too much fast food. Nonetheless, documentaries, such as Game Changer, and research on vegetarian and vegan diet claim that indeed it is healthier for you in the long term. The article “The long-term health of vegetarians and vegans” published in 2015 states that these diets have a lower prevalence of overweight and obesity, and a lower risk of IHD. As well as evidence for a lower risk of cancer, diabetes, and diverticular diseases. Nonetheless, when going vegan be mindful of how to get all your vitamins in and do your research.

The last question I will be talking about is: Do you even get full? I always have to smile when I hear that question, mostly because my grandma is always asking that. Well, yes if you eat enough, you will always get full. It is true that, for example, tofu has 73% fewer calories than beef. Being mindful of your eating habits and consuming enough protein will make you feel fuller and more satisfied. People that have problems getting all of your proteins in, they could just add vegan protein powder to their diet. Nonetheless, if you have a balanced diet and eat enough you will satisfy your cravings. As OnPoint Nutrition states:

“Because vegan diets are more nutrient dense than calorically dense (meaning, you eat many nutrient rich plant foods with lower amounts of calories per serving), it is normal to feel hungry more frequently than non-vegans or non-vegetarians.

Here’s the good news – eat more!”

Consuming vegan is a commitment, and you might get asked many questions about why you stick to that diet. As you are starting your journey, you will not master the cooking, grocery shopping, or ordering right away but you will grow in this lifestyle over time and will discover many benefits of that diet.
