Accidentally Vegan

When people hear that you are vegan or they want to go vegan themselves, many think that there will be nothing to eat besides vegetables and fruits. However, this is not true. There are many products that are already vegan that people are consuming on a day-to-day basis, but they are not aware that they are vegan. Many products are not specifically labeled as vegan but are actually plant-based. With this blog post, I want to go over some products that you might use and will be surprised that they are vegan.

Let's start with some breakfast items. A lot of cereal is plant-based, even though it does not have a label on it. For example Cap’n Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch, Nature’s Path Sunrise Crunchy Maple, Quaker Life Original, Kashi Dark Cocoa Karma, and much more. You can find a thorough list of different vegan cereals at Peta. Further, many granolas are vegan as well, just check the list of ingredients at the back and make sure it does not contain any honey, milk products, or eggs. Another thing that plenty of people eat at breakfast is all kinds of bakery items, such as bagels, toast, croissants, bread, and more. I heard many times already that I cannot eat bread as a vegan, but yes I can. There are plenty of bakery items that are actually vegan. Typically, bread such as sourdough bread, baguette, pita, ciabatta, and focaccia is always vegan, if made in the traditional way. Further, brands such as Arnold have a variety of vegan bakery items, such as its bread, rolls, and thins. Also, products from the brand Thomas’ are mostly vegan, like its bagels, mini bagels, thin bagels, and pita pockets. Also, for all the croissant lovers out there, Crescent's refrigerated croissant rolls are vegan. When you are not entirely sure if the bakery item of your desire is vegan, always check the ingredient list. Bread containing eggs, honey, royal jelly, gelatin, or dairy-based ingredients like milk, butter, buttermilk, whey, or casein isn't considered vegan.

Who does not love to have a little snack here and there? Well, you can be relieved because there are plenty of brands that are accidentally producing vegan snacks. Here is a list:

  • Oreo cookies

  • Pringles (original, barbecue flavor)

  • Takis

  • Doritos (sweet-spicy flavor)

  • Ritz Crackers

  • Sour Patch Kids

  • Nature Valley crunchy granola bars

  • Lays Chips (original, barbecue flavor, salt & vinegar, slightly salted)

  • Triscuit Crackers

  • Lindt Chocolate (70% cacao and up)

  • Manner cookies

These are just some examples of snacks that are surprisingly vegan. To review some more accidentally vegan snacks, visit Vegnews.

Lastly, I want to mention some of the more obvious products that are accidentally vegan:

  • Pasta (most dried pasta is vegan unless it mentions containing eggs)

  • Rice

  • Oatmeal

  • Fries

  • Hummus

  • Spices and Seasonings

  • Ketchup

  • Mustard

  • Hot sauces

  • Nut butter, like almond butter and peanut butter

As you can see there are many many products that are actually vegan that you are probably already consuming. If you want to make sure a product is vegan, just always look at the back of the packaging in the ingredients list for eggs, honey, royal jelly, gelatin, or dairy-based ingredients like milk, butter, buttermilk, whey, or casein. Also, when you are in a restaurant, you can always ask the server if your desired meal is vegan.
